Bee Pollen & All it's Glory

Cassandra is back and she's bringing us installment 2 of the wondrous world of bees!  Today's topic?  Bee pollen and all it's glory.  Check it out.

Hello, it’s been a week since we last talked bees and I promised you some more interesting info. Maybe since last week you’ve got your feelers out there looking for some good connections to bees and their honey in your area.  In the last post we talked about how sweet honey is, and I mentioned that bees also lend us a few other amazing products.  Bee pollen is the buzz topic today, and I am just going to get straight to the point here with this stuff because I really hope you’ll give it a try! I can go way deep into nerd land on all these bee topics but in effort of saving your fingers the scrolling down motion to the bottom of the page where I give you a recipe for a fantastic fall smoothie, here is the low down on bee pollen.

Bees collect the pollen from flowers and carry it back to their hive, where it is saved to feed the young bees. Bee pollen is a real pick-me-up high-energy superfood; it’s no wonder why they save this food to feed their larva. Bee pollen has the full gamut of all 22 amino acids; it’s high in protein and packed with enzymes, not to mention that it contains vitamins (ie: B-complex, C, D, E), minerals, folic acid and anti-oxidants!!!  Some of the many bee pollen benefits?
  • Can actually help lessen seasonal allergies if you consume local bee pollen
  • Supports fertility
  • Boosts immunity
  • Gives a glow to skin both from consuming and using topically
  • Aids the digestive system
  • Creates sustained energy boost

The good news…Bee pollen is a complete source of nutrients that is also completely affordable,
and you don’t need to consume much to reap all these great benefits. Start with about 1 teaspoon and gradually increase up to 1 tablespoon per day max (kids max ½ teaspoon).  Want to find out more about bees and why they are so beneficial to us?  Check out the documentary Vanishing of the Bees.

Here’s a simple fall flavored recipe that tastes delicious with the addition of bee pollen…

Apple Spice Smoothie
1 apple roughly diced
1 cup almond milk
1-2 tablespoons almond butter (depends on how thick you want it)
1 teaspoon maple syrup (preferably grade b)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 slice of fresh ginger
1 teaspoon bee pollen
dash of vanilla flavor (bean or extract)
dash of nutmeg
dash of sea salt
Blend everything together until smooth and enjoy.

Other ways to incorporate bee pollen: sprinkle over salads, use in other smoothies, add to breakfast (ie; over oatmeal, on top of a coconut yogurt), or add to homemade snacks like granola bars.

*Side-Note: Please use cautions if you have not yet tried bee pollen, as a small percentage of people are allergic (most often if you have a known allergy to bees). Beeee on the look out for next week’s 3rd and final bee topic post… beeswax and its uses.

Enjoy!

-Cassandra
